'കുളം കര' ഒരു കളി മാത്രമല്ല . 300 ഓളം നാട്ടുകാരുടെ സഹകരണത്താൽ രൂപം കൊണ്ട ഒരു കൂട്ടപ്പാട്ട് . ചാടിയും പാടിയും ഒരു പാട്ട്. Kulam Kara is a musical short film that throws light on the double standards of the news media. Media is a collective term used for publications like daily/weekly/monthly newspaper, news channels, online portals and social media portals. The role of media in adversely influencing the people’s minds and a few incidents of 2016 are depicted through this video by matching steps with a popular children’s game (Kulam Kara) seen in villages. Typically, the news that reaches the common man is interpreted in different ways and people form different opinions on the same. These opinions then divide the society on the basis of which side they are on. No one takes the effort to know the truth behind such news. The agenda of individuals and organisations with vested interests, the things which the society needs to know, the topics to be discussed, the stories to be followed, the happenings to be shared, each and everything is pre-decided by the news industry, which is then served to the viewers to devour. We live in a society where public blindly believes in whatever news put to them even if its a fake one and act accordingly. We do not have a rational mind or we are not interested to know the real story, as we believe finding the truth becomes a burden for us, and media always exploit this mentality of people for their personal interests. Media, which is considered as the fourth pillar in a democratic society, enjoys certain high regard in the society, but due to their vested interests, they stoop to low levels. This behaviour of the media is questioned through the musical short film, which is a journey of people and their doubts, depicted through the game of ‘Kulam Kara’. The film also peeps into different methods of so-called news making, like selective leaking of news, twisting of stories, and mixing news with absurd arguments. Media unnecessarily pokes into a person's privacy and celebrates it as news, all in the name of investigative journalism. Kulam Kara is a strong reminder to society and a rebuttal to media from ordinary people in a village. To conclude, it should be each and everyone's responsibility to be aware of these coloured stories and have to ensure the veracity of news and not continue being a puppet in the hands of media.
