The repeated line "ना जाने कवना पीर से" ("Who knows what pain she carries?") creates a sense of mystery. In the last stanza, however, the poet reveals that her pain is actually love-longing for Krishna (Murlidhar Ahir). Here's the meaning stanza by stanza: मुखड़ा आँचर भींज गइल बा नैनवा के नीर से ना जाने कवना पीर से ना "Her veil has been soaked by the tears flowing from her eyes. No one knows what sorrow or pain she is suffering from." This paints the picture of a young woman silently weeping, her grief hidden from the world. पहला अंतरा सिर पे बूंदा सोभे लाल, खिलल बा दुनो तरफ के गाल राह में चलत बाड़ी कतना धीरे धीर से ना जाने कवना पीर से ना She wears a beautiful red bindi (or forehead ornament). Her rosy cheeks make her look radiant. Yet she walks very slowly and thoughtfully, lost in her own emotions. Looking at her, people wonder, "What pain is troubling her?" Meaning: Outwardly she is beautifully adorned, but inwardly she is weighed down by sorrow. दूसरा अंतरा रूप रचले बिधाता, हमरा देखला से जनाता बरनन करीं कतना पैर औरु सिर के ना जाने कवना पीर से ना God (Bidhata) has created her with extraordinary beauty. Anyone who sees her realizes how graceful she is. From her feet to her head, every feature is beyond description. Meaning: The poet praises her unmatched beauty, while reminding us that even such beauty cannot hide the pain in her heart. तीसरा अंतरा कबिता कइले हनुमान, जिनकर पवट बा मकान ई त फँसल बाड़ी मुरलीधर अहीर से ना जाने कवना पीर से ना This stanza reveals the secret. "Hanuman" is the poet/lyricist, not the deity. पवट (Pawat) refers to the poet's native place. मुरलीधर अहीर literally means Krishna, the flute-bearing cowherd. The meaning is: "This poem has been composed by Ustad Hanuman Patha of Pawat village. The truth is that this maiden has fallen in love with Murlidhar Ahir (Lord Krishna). That is the pain hidden in her heart." Overall interpretation The song portrays a gopi-like heroine who appears beautifully dressed but is quietly crying because of viraha—the pain of separation from her beloved Krishna. Throughout the song, listeners are left wondering about the cause of her tears, until the final line reveals that her heart has been captured by Murlidhar Ahir (Krishna). This theme of love, longing, and devotion (श्रृंगार-भक्ति) is a hallmark of Bhojpuri Purbi folk songs, where the heroine's romantic yearning simultaneously symbolizes the soul's longing for the Divine. ♫ Enjoy & stay connected with us!
