Hey, In this video, I discuss and go over the new brief, the second project as part of the remainder of the semester. The brief, 'material matters' explores, the methodologies and philosophies in art-making through the importance and consideration of Materials and the media that is used to make a work or a series of works. The purpose is to start off with one material and investigate/research in great depth the utilities, nature, conservation, consumption, production, and furthermore physical and possible emotional/psychological attachments and properties it may conduct. I began by exploring rust + glue. They are interesting materials which offer a lot of potential in the way they can be used to make art. In saying so here are some of the questions that have derived from the brief, which are handy to ask and individually consider when choosing a material/medium. - What is the material you are exploring? - What are its physical characteristics and properties? - Does this material comprise other materials? - How is your material produced and formed? Is it hand made, industrial, organic/synthetic? And can these processes be used to inform your material exploration? - Where was it made and how has it arrived in your hands? - What are the economic, social, and labor conditions of where it was made? - Is this material the subject of political debate or situation? - Are there any known historical, recent news stories that involve this material? - Does your material have any historic or traditional relationship to Art (has this material been used by artists historically) Eg: oil paint, clay and, if so, how might you critique or play on that in a contemporary art context? • What is the material’s primary use value? (Its intended function) what is its economical worth? • How has this material been used throughout history and what might be the future uses of the material? Feel free to copy these questions and make notations for your own individual practice! It is of good practice to put these ideas and questions into practice at all times. Another very important work and I guess catalog of possibilities is in the Richard Serra's, 'Verb List'. If you don't know it or haven't heard of it, definitely worth checking out. It has very interesting verbs that further continue to push the investigation of materials. I've attached a link to it down below. I also attached an influential and humble art forum/talk by Mexican Artists, Ektor Garcia, and Martin Solo Climent. As part of the ACCA Show, 'Dwelling Poetically: Mexico City, A case study'. Their talk revolved around their approaches to making work, their approach to installing work, and their views on the importance of the choice of materials and media when making work. Both having a completely different approach to art-making, with very different results and views. It was a very informative and charged forum, which I was glad to have gone to, and had the honour to get to meet them and chat with them too.
