On June 26th, 2011, Lauren Giddings was studying hard for her upcoming bar exam. She had a feeling that somebody was watching her and had been entering her home, but she tried to let that anxiety go and focus on the task at hand. She was kind to her downstairs neighbor, Stephen McDaniel, a law student at the same University who referred to himself as a recluse. Lauren was set to move out of her apartment after her exam and was looking forward to the next chapter ahead. Stephen McDaniel had been trying to get her to go on a date with him for months, which she politely declined, explaining to him that she had a boyfriend. One night, he broke into her apartment and watched her sleep. She woke up, got a huge fright, and shouted "Get Out!" He snapped, if he couldn't have her, no-one could.. he jumped on Lauren and str*ngled her to death and then placed her in her bathtub, returning to his apartment. The next day, he returned with a hacksaw in hand, discarding of her body in dumpsters and trash cans around campus. Lauren was reported missing on June 30th, 2011. Her torso was discovered that same day. WGXA interviewed Stephen that day too, and it was a memorable performance, including a breakdown when he learned that a body had been discovered. In 2014, he accepted a plea deal to avoid the death penalty and pleaded guilty to murder. McDaniels has filed several appeals, with the help of his dad (who also started a GoFundMe that was promptly taken down), but all were denied. On May 30th, 2022, another petition was filed from him, where he requested that his conviction be overturned and he be released from prison. It was denied.
