BOAT LIFE on the Hard - Maintenance + Repairs of a 2 YO Performance SAILING CATAMARAN | Ep. 73 When people think about sailing around the world, the images conjured are sunshine filled days at the helm and trimming sails, dolphins jumping at the bow, snorkeling beautiful reefs or exploring new places, but we’ve found the reality to be a bit different. More time has been spent working on the boat and waiting for parts, either at a dock or at a marina. The hope is that this will change or at least even out. This notion is what keeps us going, the desire to sail our home to experience new places, cultures and natural beauty, so we persevere in the face of challenges, wipe the sweat from our brows, flush the fumes from our eyes, and keep frustration at bay to continue chasing our dream. We came to Linton Bay, Panama on May 30th to have the boat hauled for a bottom paint and repairs requiring the boat to be on the hard. We hadn’t made a reservation because if you recall, coming to Panama was a last minute decision. Upon arrival we learned the lift operator was going on vacation for a month in two weeks time so we reserved the haul out for July 16th and booked a trip to Italy to see Fabio’s mom. We returned to Panama eager to commence, but of course the lift needed maintenance and was not operating. Patience. About a week later, we were thrilled to see the lift working again. Wanderlust was hauled out of the water and the work began; sanding and painting the bottom, and a laundry list of maintenance and repairs. This period has also given us time to reflect a bit and we shared a bit of our introspection in this episode. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our Seawind 1600 catamaran, Wanderlust, in September, 2020. We're sailing her to Harbors Unknown, to explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We're sharing our adventures as a sailing couple living on a boat and how it’s possible to live an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment.
