I've got a weekly letter for you on the patterns that keep killing pilots. Free β†’ https://pilotdebrief.com/pattern On a low-ceiling June morning in 2011, a Beechcraft A36 Bonanza shot an RNAV approach into Charlevoix, Michigan in weather well below minimums β€” and when the pilot finally broke out, he didn't go missed. The reported ceiling at Charlevoix Municipal Airport that morning was 200 feet AGL with one mile of visibility. The straight-in minimum descent altitude for the RNAV (GPS) approach to runway 27 was 500 feet; circling minimums were 700 and a mile. The weather wasn't close to legal β€” it was hundreds of feet below either option. The pilot flew the approach anyway. He broke out of the clouds roughly halfway down the runway, far too late to land, and the published missed approach was the only procedurally correct response. Instead, he stayed low, maneuvered around the field at about 200 feet AGL, and entered a right downwind to try again visually beneath a 200-foot ceiling. Witnesses watched the Bonanza turn from downwind to base, pitch up, roll left, and depart controlled flight. The airplane stalled and descended into a residential garage adjacent to the airport. The private pilot and one passenger were killed; a second passenger was seriously injured. A postaccident teardown of the airframe and engine found no preimpact failure or malfunction. The NTSB attributed the accident to inadequate airspeed while maneuvering at low altitude, with the decision to continue rather than execute the missed approach in below-minimums weather as a contributing factor. The pattern here isn't exotic. It's the squeeze that happens when a pilot who has already accepted an approach in unflyable weather refuses to accept the missed approach that goes with it. Once the airplane is low, slow, improvising a visual pattern beneath an IFR ceiling, the margins for a stall in the turn are gone. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ JOIN THE DEBRIEF CREW ON PATREON Ad-free videos and exclusive analysis From $5/month: https://patreon.com/pilotdebrief ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCES NTSB Accident ID: CEN11FA417 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ABOUT PILOT DEBRIEF Pilot Debrief is hosted by Hoover, a retired F-15E pilot and current pilot for a major U.S. airline. Every video on this channel analyzes publicly released NTSB final reports, factual narratives, CVR/FDR transcripts, and docket evidence to extract practical safety lessons for general aviation pilots. We do not speculate beyond the evidence. We do not blame pilots for being human. We debrief the decisions and the systems, not the people. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Sponsorships and brand partnerships: [email protected] #PilotDebrief #NTSB #AviationSafety #GeneralAviation #IFR
