“Free Guy” introduces us to Free City-- a video game world where anything is possible. That kind of freedom meant the movie’s VFX crew had to work hard to create a realistic yet imaginative world where characters could fly into the air, jump off buildings, and get into massive battles and crazy car chases without a scratch. The team at Scanline VFX and Lola VFX put their heart and soul into the video game world--and we got an incredible movie out of it. So how much of “Free Guy” was CGI, and how much was real? Ryan Reynolds’ face was superimposed onto the actor they got to play Dude, cars were customized to look unique and futuristic with CGI overlays, and actors and stunt performers were running around the Stash House pretending to be hit by projectiles that were added later in post-production. The movie was filmed on real streets in Boston and Los Angeles, but the store fronts were all digitally transformed to look unique to the video game world-- especially once players put their glasses on. Director Shawn Levy was stoked about creating a world where he could do anything. It could be reshaped to his whims thanks to talented artists. When Free City is being deleted, real people were running through the streets-- but destruction and extra characters were added in later with some VFX.
