It belongs to the dural venous sinuses and therefore receives and transports venous blood from the brain. Like the other dural venous sinuses the cavernous sinuses are valveless. It is also called parasellar sinus, located on either side of the sella turcica of the sphenoid bone. The cavernous sinus is roofed by an inner layer of dura mater that continues with the diaphragma sellae covering the superior part of the pituitary gland. The cavernous sinus is not only involved in the venous drainage of the brain, but also facilitates the passage of numerous vessels and cranial nerves.
