This small piece of Indian territory is surrounded by Bangladesh, but that piece of Bangladeshi territory is surrounded by India, but that piece of India is again surrounded by Bangladesh. In other words, to travel to Dahala Khagrabari from mainland India, you will need to make not one, not two, not three, but four international border crossings. And that is exactly what the Bangladeshi owner of the farm Dahala Khagrabari was on had to do every single day to reach his own land. The border was a holdover from 18th century borders of former princely states and districts before India and Bangladesh became countries, where entire villages were apparently “gambled” away by kings playing chess games, creating the result that there were hundreds of enclaves just like this one between India and Bangladesh. But as geographically interesting as this situation was, it was no fun at all for their 70,000 residents. These enclaves were denied services from the surrounding government, including such basics as water, roads, and healthcare. For example, one woman who was going into labor was initially denied admission to the hospital down the street because she was technically Bangladeshi but the hospital was Indian. And even after she gave birth, the hospital refused to issue the birth certificate because the baby was Bangladeshi. Although this situation was resolved in 2015 by an agreement which removed most enclaves between India and Bangladesh, that did create a weird situation where a whole bunch of Bangladeshis were suddenly living in India and vice versa, so governments gave residents the rare chance to pick their own nationality and thousands of people ended up moving.
