⚙️ The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar (pronounced "El-ten-eleven")[1] is an American medium-to-long-range, wide-body trijet airliner built by the Lockheed Corporation. It was the third wide-body airliner to enter commercial operations, after the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. The airliner has a seating capacity of up to 400 passengers and a range of over 4,000 nautical miles (7,410 km; 4,600 mi). Its trijet configuration has three Rolls-Royce RB.211 engines with one engine under each wing, and a third engine center-mounted in the rear fuselage with an S-duct air inlet on the top of the fuselage. The aircraft has an autoland capability, an automated descent control system, and available lower deck galley and lounge facilities. ⚙️ Stargazer is a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar built in 1974 and modified in 1994 by Orbital Sciences (now part of Northrop Grumman) to serve as the mother ship for the Pegasus, an air-launched orbital rocket. As of June 2021, it has conducted 39 Pegasus launches carrying nearly 100 satellites. It is the only airworthy L-1011 remaining in service as of 2026. ☝️🤓Introduction & OriginsBuilt in 1974, this Lockheed L-1011 TriStar (C-FTNJ) served Air Canada and briefly leased to Air Lanka. It was retired to Marana in 1990.The Orbital TransformationIn 1992, Orbital Sciences Corporation bought the jet (N140SC). They hired Marshall Aerospace to modify it into a carrier for Pegasus, the first private orbital rocket. Orbital chose the L-1011 over the B-52, 747, and DC-10 due to performance and cost.The Dual Keel Beam AdvantageThe L-1011 won because it features parallel dual keel beams instead of a single central beam. This unique structure solved three critical issues:Fin Clearance: The rocket's large top fin fit perfectly between the parallel beams.Ground Clearance: Center-line mounting kept the rocket high enough off the tarmac.Symmetry: Center-mounting avoided the severe aerodynamic penalties of side-mounting.Deep ModificationsRenamed Stargazer, the aircraft underwent massive overhauls:Reinforcement: Fortified airframe and keel beams to handle launch stresses.Launch Console: Gutted cabin replaced with a Payload Operations Center.Payload Support: Added climate control, nitrogen purging, and power hookups.Upgraded Engines: Fitted with more powerful Rolls-Royce RB.211-524 engines in 2010.Operational HistoryStargazer debuted on June 27, 1994. While early Pegasus launches used NASA’s B-52 ("Balls 8"), Stargazer took over permanently in 1995 after rocket fin modifications. Owning Stargazer gave Orbital corporate independence and superior center-line mounting compared to NASA's heavily booked, wing-mounted B-52.The Grand FinaleNow owned by Northrop Grumman, Stargazer is the last airworthy L-1011 on Earth, allowing the company to buy surplus spare parts cheaply.After weather delays, its final Pegasus launch is scheduled for July 2nd (July 3rd in Europe).
