We did not expect this! Snow, high alpine flowers, and trail mix: This is what we found on the Pakistani side of the Pakistan-China border. Following the Karakoram Highway, we traveled northeast to the Khunjerab Pass. To get to the border crossing, we have to enter the Khunjerab National Park. There is a park entrance fee of about $80 USD. From the National Park entrance, it is about 32 kilometers from the border. The road through the National Park is paved and in decent condition, while the scenery is fantastic. Slightly forested and rocky outcroppings quickly turn to high alpine tundra and snow-capped mountain peaks of the Karakoram Mountains. Even before getting to the Khunjerab National Park, we traveled through the town of Sost. We stopped to get snacks and water. Once in the park, we didn’t pass any places to purchase food, so we were happy to have those with us. We loved having a picnic in the alpine meadow with our Pakistani trail mix of dried fruit, nuts, dried coconut, and sweets. The border goes through the Karakoram Mountains and even passes over K2, the world’s second-largest mountain. At the border, you can walk on the snow that is leftover from winter and even see hints of the Siachen Glacier.
