Not all souls are the same. According to ancient Gnostic texts preserved in mystery schools, passed down through allegories, and suppressed by orthodox institutions for centuries, there are three distinct types of souls, three different orientations of being that determine how a person relates to reality, to truth, and to the possibility of awakening. In this opening episode of a five part series, Alex introduces the framework and immediately does something rare. He disagrees with part of it. The three types, drawn from Gnostic Christian communities of the first few centuries of the common era and appearing in texts including the Tripartite Tractate, the Gospel of Philip, and writings attributed to Valentinus, are the hylic, the psychic, and the pneumatic. The hylic soul is oriented entirely toward matter, validating only what can be experienced through the five senses. The psychic soul accepts that something exists beyond the purely material and processes it through religion, community, and inherited tradition. The pneumatic soul is oriented directly toward spirit, toward the recognition that the real self is neither the body nor the mind nor even the conventional soul. Alex presents all three with clarity and care. And then he pushes back. His disagreement is not with the descriptions themselves but with the implication that these are fixed categories of being with different spiritual worth baked in. He is a million percent certain the source that created all of us makes no such distinctions. We are all created from the same origin in the same love. The three types, as he sees them, are not what you are. They are what you are currently electing to focus on. And elections can change. This reframe turns a potentially divisive hierarchy into a genuinely useful map. The hylic orientation is not a sentence. Being fully invested in the material world, pursuing what this reality offers, trusting what you can see and touch and verify, is a valid and complete experience. There is nothing wrong with it. The psychic orientation, feeling that something exists beyond the material and engaging with it through religious or communal frameworks, is not a lesser spiritual position than the pneumatic. It is a different relationship with the same larger reality. And even the pneumatic orientation, the one the ancient Gnostics described as closest to awakening, does not make the person holding it better or more valued by the source than anyone else. Alex also connects this series to his earlier episode on NPCs, the idea that some large percentage of humanity might not carry the same kind of inner life as others, and clearly states that he does not agree with that framing either.
