1960 JWF Milano GT Recreation In 1959 the Sydney-based Ian Johnson, Jeff Williams and Grant Furzer founded JWF Fibreglass Industries. JWF went on to produced kit bodies for cars and a small number of complete cars from 1959 to 1969 where production ceased. The first kit offered was an open cockpit Milano 750, the car showcased the JWF vision; to convert an existing chassis from an Austin 7 or the like into a sweeping, sleek, aerodynamic Sports car. The concept proved popular with enthusiasts with up to eight variations in length and width to fit an array of different chassis produced. Included in the development was a closed Coupe body Milano as well as longer wheelbase options to fit a wider array of chassis, these were knows as Milano 850 and 1000 (depending on length), the Milano GT was introduced as well as the Italia and later the Milano GT2. Among the complete cars built, there were ‘works’ cars that competed in the mid 1960’s, driven by Bruce Leer and Sam Johsnon and Dick Willis who raced a privateer entry. All up, they sold over 300 kits of these bodies were sold up until 1962, with many of the "kit-cars" being built privately by customers with predominantly Holden running gear (though a number of other manufacturers were used by others). Fitting in with the original ethos of the JWF, this original lightweight Milano GT shell (possibly intended for competition when built) was discovered by Mark Hinton in a backyard at Reedy Creek, Queensland. The body was in good condition, unused and not mounted to any chassis. Once acquired, Mark turned to John Wynn (ex-Ford GTHO racing test driver, developer and founder, designer, and engineer of JMW competition cars) to help to construct a chassis to mount the body onto. A sturdy, beautiful chassis was crafted, and the mechanicals were now ready to be assembled. The car features a fully independent suspension, AXO adjustable coil over’s and fully adjustable ‘A’ arms, gardner axles, inboard rear disc brakes and a Holden LSD differential. At the heart of the Milano GT is a Chevrolet 350ci engine built by Russell Jones, with 4-bolt main, high performance crank, rodsand pistons, dart alloy heads, flowed and matched to single plain manifold, DRP carburettor. Mallory ignition, pointless distributor and gauges. Large custom alloy radiator and fuel tank. Dry cell battery. Willwood pedals and boosted vented brakes. Power is fed through a 4-speed Top Loader Gearbox with a Renegate Sequential Shifter, heavy duty clutch and lightened flywheel. Dyno turned to 450hp and weighing just 820kgs, the Milano produces an impressive power to weight ratio, this vehicle has recently been on Qld club registration. A stylish 60’s sports car appearance with a modern spin on specification has created a fast, fun car that is sure to grab attention both on and off the track!
