Somebody offended you yesterday. Today you are still replaying it: I should have said that, why didn't I say that, next time I see them this is what I'll say. Hours go by and you are angrier than when it happened. In this 2017 talk from Brisbane, Eckhart Tolle explains what is doing that, and where it came from. The starting point, he says, is always the present moment. But the normal way of being in it is not to be there: you are there physically, and your mind is in the past or the future. For most people the present moment is peripheral, because underneath there is a belief that "there" is more important than "here", always. Nobody says it out loud. They live it. What lives in the gap is the voice in the head, a running commentary on your life that talks in the first person, or in the second person as you, or even in the third. Thinking was a great evolutionary step, and for everything there is a price. Eckhart cites a theory that when humans first began to think in words, they believed gods were speaking to them, and that over thousands of years the voice became what we take ourselves to be. For many people it is a daily source of misery: it tells you that you are not good enough, it complains about everyone, and it dwells on the negative because that is where it can get a hold. An animal cannot keep yesterday alive. When he was writing The Power of Now, Eckhart watched two ducks fight in a park, for thirty seconds or less. Then each swam off, rose up on the water, flapped its wings, and carried on as if nothing had happened. The energy was gone. The mind that keeps it alive is the only difference. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
