It is one of the most secure operating systems available, having suffered only two remote vulnerabilities in decades. I once configured an OpenBSD box for a final Capture the Flag event, and the participants completely failed to compromise it because they skipped the fundamentals. They did not follow a systematic methodology. They did not map the attack surface correctly. If they had actually verified the open ports, they would have found a root shell that I had purposefully bound to a non-standard port using SSH. All they had to do was interact with that specific port to gain instant root access, but they completely missed it. Despite its superior security, very few organizations deploy OpenBSD because they assume it is too difficult to configure. I completely disagree with that assumption. We deploy it extensively in our architectures because we know most malicious actors lack the technical depth to bypass it. If there is a filtering device between you and the target, you must abandon loud automation and transition to a slow, highly controlled probe. When clients ask me how closely a virtual testing lab can mirror a live production environment, my answer is always the same. We can virtualize almost any enterprise network with near-perfect fidelity, with the explicit exception of heavy Industrial Control Systems and SCADA hardware. We can virtualize the network layers, emulate the Programmable Logic Controllers, and simulate individual sensors. But I cannot virtualize a physical turbine generator or a blast furnace. For true ICS testing, you must blend your virtualized architecture with physical hardware components.
