A TAC PAK range test was conducted to study the relationship between barrel length and muzzle blast measured in decibels using .22LR subsonic ammunition. The purpose of this test was to compare how different barrel lengths affect sound signature, muzzle blast, and overall shooting characteristics when using the same ammunition type. Weapons used in this test: • Walther P22 — 3.5-inch barrel • Smith & Wesson .22 — 4.5-inch barrel • Ruger Mark II Target — 5.5-inch barrel • MAB .22 — 6.5-inch barrel • Mano Arms Rifle .22 — 20-inch barrel • Lever Action Rifle .22 — 28-inch barrel Ammunition used: • Eley .22LR Subsonic Testing Method: Sound levels were measured using a decibel meter under controlled range conditions. The same ammunition type was used throughout the test to maintain consistency and accuracy. Test Results: The recorded sound levels showed a clear relationship between barrel length and muzzle blast. Shorter barrels produced significantly louder muzzle blast, while longer barrels reduced the sound signature considerably. Measured sound variation ranged approximately from: • 85 decibels with shorter barrels to • 55 decibels with longer barrels Test Conclusion: The test demonstrated that shorter barrel lengths produce higher muzzle blast due to incomplete powder burn and increased gas pressure exiting the muzzle. Longer barrels allow more complete powder combustion, resulting in reduced muzzle blast and, in many cases, improved velocity efficiency depending on ammunition type. However, ammunition design and calibre characteristics also play a major role. Some modern calibres, such as 9mm, use faster-burning powder that is optimized for shorter barrels, resulting in minimal velocity loss and less noticeable changes in muzzle blast. This TAC PAK test highlights how barrel length can significantly influence shooting comfort, sound signature, recoil perception, and ballistic performance in .22LR firearms.
