Shipped a 30-year-old LandCruiser to California, then rolled it on its side at Walker Hill. Shaun Whale and Graham Cahill run Loon Lake to Cadillac Hill on 35s in the Sierra Nevada. Part 1 of a four-part USA series. Shauno put the Dirty 30 in a container and sent it to America, Graham Cahill built 4WD 24/7's first ever Jeep, and the pair of them pointed both rigs at the trailhead above Loon Lake at 1,900 metres in California's High Sierra. Twenty-two miles of granite with barely a metre of flat ground on it, and most people give themselves two to four days. The local advice before they started was blunt: you can't do the Rubicon on 35s. The car park at the trailhead is nothing but trailers and buggies, and the crew turn up with moderate lifts and Aussie touring builds. Shaun Whale is in the LandCruiser, Graham Cahill has Pete co-driving the Jeep, Tim from Mits Alloy is running a Tacoma with a full touring canopy, and Dylan and Ryan from REDARC are along on 38s. Both Aussies end up on the winch three metres into the Gatekeeper — the very first obstacle. Then a local Jeep snaps a rear axle in front of them and the whole hub assembly falls out of the wheel, and the boys spend an afternoon reverse-winching it off the trail. From there: a first night on canvas in the States with a bear sniffing around the swags, Walker Hill and the committed line that puts the 30 gently over onto its canopy and brush bars, and a hidden Rubicon Trail Foundation camp on a creek that Shauno calls the best 4WD experience of his life. Curried snags cooked for a couple of Americans who've never seen one. Buck Island Lake, then the Big Sluice — the most notorious descent on the trail — Rubicon Springs and an esky of beer from the caretakers, and finally Cadillac Hill and Observation Point.
