Before George Washington became the face of the American Revolution, he was a young Virginia militia officer desperate to prove himself on the dangerous frontier. In 1753 and 1754, Washington was sent into the Ohio Country, where British, French, and Native American interests collided over land, trade, and empire. What began as a diplomatic mission soon turned into a military expedition, as French forces seized the Forks of the Ohio and built Fort Duquesne. Washington’s first battle came at Jumonville Glen, where a brief skirmish and the killing of a French officer created an international crisis. Weeks later, surrounded, outnumbered, and soaked by rain at Fort Necessity, Washington was forced to surrender his first command post. This video follows the young George Washington from his early life and surveying career to the frontier clash that helped ignite the French and Indian War — and eventually the Seven Years’ War, one of the first truly global conflicts in history.
