2016年4月14日午後9時26分に熊本地方で発生したM6.5の地震で、熊本県益城町では震度7を観測しました。また、16日午前1時25分にはM7.3の地震が発生し、益城町と西原村で震度7、熊本県を中心に九州各地で、強い揺れを観測しました。 震度7の地震が同一の地域で連続して発生したのは、観測史上初めてのことで、気象庁は14日の地震を「前震」、16日の地震を「本震」としました。 14日以降、震度5以上の地震が1カ月で20回以上、震度1以上の地震が半年で4000回を超えるなど活発な地震活動が続きました。
