1970年以前,台灣的舞廳旺盛時期,有夏威夷吉他和烏克麗麗的樂團,最受舞廳歡迎爭聘,烏克麗麗也成為夏威夷吉他重要的伴奏樂器,自從沒有舞廳之後,彈夏威夷吉他的樂師,都改行彈別種樂器(因為夏威夷吉他要彈流行歌曲比較困難)從此台灣的夏威夷吉他漸漸成為稀有樂器,眾所週知的烏克麗麗,也不知從何時被台灣的現代人誤稱為夏威夷吉他(只有台灣如此)
