Under international law, forced military intervention is generally not allowed because it goes against the basic idea of state sovereignty. Every country is supposed to control its own territory and political system without outside interference. This principle is central to the United Nations system that was created to prevent powerful countries from attacking weaker ones. The UN Charter clearly says that countries should not use force against another country, except in very limited situations. These exceptions include self-defense if a country is attacked, or action approved by the UN Security Council to maintain international peace. Despite these rules, many countries still carry out military interventions. This happens because international law is weakly enforced. The UN does not have its own army, and enforcement depends on member states themselves. Powerful countries, especially those with veto power in the Security Council, can block action against themselves or their allies. Geopolitics also plays a big role. Countries intervene militarily to protect strategic interests such as oil, trade routes, regional influence, or national security. When major powers believe their interests are at risk, they often act first and justify their actions later using arguments like protecting human rights, or restoring democracy. Another reason is the lack of consequences. Smaller countries are often punished for violating international law, but powerful nations usually are not. This creates a double standard where rules exist on paper but are not applied equally in practice. In simple terms, forced military intervention is banned under UN laws to prevent chaos and war, but it still happens because power often matters more than rules in global politics. International law tries to control behavior, but it cannot fully stop countries from using force when they believe the stakes are high enough.
