Two Workers Rescued After Spending Nine Days Inside Nepal Hydropower Tunnel Two workers have been rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel in Nepal nine days after catastrophic floods buried the facility beneath mud, rocks and debris. Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan were found approximately 170 metres inside a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project. Search teams intensified their operation after hearing voices coming from beneath the blocked structure. Rescuers inserted a steel pipe through the debris and used it to reach the trapped workers. The men were eventually brought out on stretchers and transported by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu. Shah was reported to be in a stable condition, while Maharjan required treatment for more serious health complications. The workers became trapped when a powerful debris-filled flood struck Nepal’s northern region and the border area with Tibet. Mudslides and large boulders blocked the tunnel entrances, preventing an immediate rescue. Shah reportedly said he initially tried to help other workers escape as water and debris entered the project. While trapped underground, he chanted religious mantras to remain calm and maintain hope. The enclosed section apparently contained enough air for the men to survive until rescuers reached them. The rescue has provided a rare moment of hope during one of Nepal’s worst recent natural disasters. Hundreds of rescue workers, soldiers and police personnel have been searching damaged settlements, hydropower facilities and underground tunnels. Authorities believe that additional workers could remain trapped in other underground sections. Rescue teams are using excavators, drilling equipment and listening devices while attempting to clear debris without causing further tunnel collapses. The survival of the two workers demonstrates why operations continue even several days after a disaster, particularly when underground chambers may contain air pockets.
