India's ₹2 Lakh Crore 'Ghost Money' Problem: Is Some of It Yours? A massive pool of unclaimed financial assets worth nearly ₹2 lakh crore is lying across India's banking and financial system, with experts referring to it as the country's "ghost money" because it belongs to people or their legal heirs but remains unclaimed. The amount includes forgotten bank deposits, dormant provident fund accounts, unpaid insurance claims, unclaimed shares, mutual funds and dividends that have remained untouched for years. Various estimates place the total close to ₹2 lakh crore across different financial institutions and asset classes. One of the biggest reasons behind these unclaimed assets is that people change jobs, shift cities, forget old bank accounts or investments, or fail to update nominee details. In many cases, families are unaware of investments made by deceased relatives, leaving the money locked in the system for years. Banks transfer deposits that remain unclaimed for more than 10 years to the RBI's Depositor Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF), but the rightful owners or their nominees can still claim the money by following the prescribed process. To help people trace forgotten deposits, the Reserve Bank of India launched the UDGAM portal, allowing users to search for unclaimed bank deposits across participating banks. Similar claim mechanisms also exist for provident fund accounts, insurance policies, shares and mutual funds through their respective regulators and agencies. Recently, the government informed Parliament that more than ₹9,330 crore alone is lying in inoperative EPF accounts, highlighting the scale of the issue. Financial experts advise people to regularly update nominee details, maintain records of all investments and inform family members about their financial assets. They say these simple steps can prevent savings accumulated over a lifetime from turning into "ghost money" that remains locked away despite having rightful owners.
