INS Kolkata and Pakistan’s PNS Hunain Collide in Rare Arabian Sea Encounter A collision between Indian and Pakistani naval vessels in the northern Arabian Sea has triggered diplomatic protests from both countries and renewed concern over unsafe military encounters at sea. The incident occurred on the evening of September 15, 2026, and involved the Indian Navy’s INS Kolkata and the Pakistan Navy’s PNS Hunain. INS Kolkata is a large guided-missile destroyer weighing approximately 7,400 tonnes, while PNS Hunain is a patrol vessel of around 2,600 tonnes. India said INS Kolkata was conducting routine surveillance in international waters when the Pakistani ship approached at high speed and performed a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre. The Ministry of External Affairs described PNS Hunain’s conduct as “unacceptable and unprofessional.” New Delhi said the manoeuvre violated international collision-prevention rules and a 1991 bilateral agreement requiring Indian and Pakistani naval vessels to maintain a separation of at least three nautical miles. Pakistan disputed India’s account, claiming that the incident occurred inside its exclusive economic zone during its Sea Spark-26 naval exercise. Islamabad accused the Indian ship of aggressive and provocative navigation. Both governments summoned diplomats and lodged formal protests. No casualties or use of weapons were reported. Indian officials said INS Kolkata suffered no major damage and continued operating at sea. PNS Hunain was reportedly damaged and returned towards port, although Pakistan has not publicly confirmed the full extent of the damage. Neither side has released complete navigation data establishing responsibility independently. The incident is particularly significant because modern warships possess radar and communication systems designed to prevent such encounters. A similar collision occurred in 2011 between India’s INS Godavari and Pakistan’s PNS Babur during an anti-piracy operation.
