Apple’s Foldable iPhone Gives Rival Samsung a Second Way to Win Apple and Samsung are competing for foldable-phone buyers, but their rivalry has a twist: Samsung Display supplies the folding screen in Apple’s new iPhone Duo. That means Samsung’s display business stands to benefit when Apple sells a phone competing with Samsung’s own Galaxy Z Fold series. The iPhone Duo, unveiled this month, is Apple’s first foldable smartphone. It opens to a 7.6-inch inner display and starts at $1,999 in the United States. Samsung, which has sold foldable phones for years, has responded with a campaign promoting its experience in the category. Reports citing a supply-chain leaker say Samsung Display has a three-year exclusive agreement to provide Apple’s foldable panels, at an estimated $250 per screen. Neither the contract term nor that price has been publicly confirmed by the companies, so they remain reported figures rather than announced deal terms. The arrangement shows why Samsung’s position is unusual. Its phone division wants shoppers to choose a Galaxy device, while its display division can earn revenue from an iPhone sale. If Apple brings more buyers into the foldable market, Samsung could benefit through component orders even as it faces stronger competition for customers. Calling Samsung the outright winner would be premature. Apple keeps the revenue from selling its phones, and Samsung Display must manufacture the panels profitably. Still, the deal highlights a familiar reality of the smartphone business: fierce competitors can depend on one another behind the screen.
