Snake Seen Swallowing Its Own Tail in Rare Self-Cannibalism Incident A sighting of a snake biting and attempting to swallow its own tail has drawn attention online, with many viewers comparing the animal to the ancient “ouroboros” symbol. The unusual behaviour is known as autophagy, or self-cannibalism. Although rarely documented in snakes, it can occur when an animal is experiencing severe environmental or medical stress. Overheating is frequently identified as a possible trigger. Snakes are ectothermic, meaning their body temperature is largely controlled by their surroundings. If a snake becomes trapped in excessive heat without access to shade or a cooler area, its metabolism rises and its normal coordination and behaviour may be disrupted. In such a distressed state, the movement or scent of its tail may activate a feeding response. However, scientists caution that the snake does not consciously decide to consume itself, and overheating is not the only possible explanation. Extreme hunger, enclosure stress, neurological illness, skin irritation, injury and nerve-related pain may also cause tail-biting. The behaviour appears particularly plausible in kingsnakes and other species that naturally prey upon snakes. Recent veterinary case reports involving two kingsnakes linked repeated self-biting episodes to spinal abnormalities and possible neurogenic pain. This suggests that the phenomenon can have complex underlying causes rather than being caused solely by high body temperature. Experts describe the behaviour as a medical emergency. Affected snakes can suffer puncture wounds, infection, tissue damage and breathing difficulties. Specialists advise moving the animal away from excessive heat without abruptly chilling it and contacting a reptile veterinarian. Forcibly pulling the tail from its mouth may cause further injury.
