Modi’s Long Uzbekistan Flight Highlights India’s Central Asia Access Problem Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent journey from New Delhi to Tashkent took an unusually long route after his aircraft avoided Pakistani airspace, drawing attention to India’s growing aviation difficulties in reaching Central Asia. Modi travelled to Uzbekistan on August 29, 2026, as part of a two-country visit that also included Kyrgyzstan. Instead of flying northwest across Pakistan—the shortest geographical route to Uzbekistan—the official aircraft reportedly travelled east and entered Central Asia through Chinese airspace. Social-media posts claimed the journey covered approximately 6,200 kilometres and lasted more than eight hours, compared with roughly three hours on a direct route. These precise figures should be treated as flight-tracking estimates rather than officially confirmed measurements. Iranian airspace restrictions reportedly limited alternative western routing options. Pakistan has restricted its airspace for Indian-owned, operated and leased aircraft amid continuing tensions with New Delhi. The restriction affects commercial airlines as well as official travel, although special diplomatic clearances may sometimes be requested separately. The geographical problem is particularly serious for journeys to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Pakistan lies directly between northern India and much of Central Asia. Without access to its airspace, Indian aircraft must make lengthy diversions either west over the Arabian Sea or east towards China. Longer routes require additional fuel, increase crew and operating costs, extend travel time and may exceed the practical range of aircraft used by low-cost airlines. Some scheduled Central Asian services have previously been suspended or modified for these reasons. The situation also exposes India’s limited direct physical connectivity with strategically important Central Asia. Pakistan blocks a straightforward land corridor, while instability and restrictions complicate routes through Afghanistan and Iran. Modi’s diverted flight was therefore more than an unusual aviation journey. It demonstrated how India–Pakistan tensions can obstruct India’s diplomatic, commercial and people-to-people engagement with the wider Central Asian region.
