An alleged BSNL cable theft in Bihar’s Munger involved a man posing as a contractor and hiring 26 labourers to dig up a roadside overnight. Reports published on August 28 described how underground telephone cables were allegedly cut before suspicious residents alerted police. The incident should therefore be identified as an August case, rather than a newly confirmed October theft. The location is also important. The reported excavation took place near Ashok Stambh Chowk within the jurisdiction of Kotwali police station. Available reports do not establish that cables were stolen from inside the police station compound itself. According to the initial accounts, the alleged organizer presented himself as a contractor from Araria. Workers were engaged in digging, and approximately one kilometer of underground cable was reportedly cut. Residents became suspicious after noticing the nighttime activity and informed the police. Police arrested six people at the scene, while the alleged contractor reportedly escaped. Officers recovered cable, digging tools, a motorcycle, a scooter and an e-rickshaw. Investigators suspected that previous pipeline work had helped some suspects identify where telephone cables were buried. These remain allegations reported during the investigation, rather than findings of guilt. The case illustrates how unauthorised excavation can resemble legitimate maintenance work. For public infrastructure, the concern extends beyond stolen material: digging can damage roads and underground services. However, the available reports do not establish a verified financial loss or the number of BSNL customers affected. Residents’ suspicions were central to bringing this particular operation to police attention.
