Bangladesh has received the first batch of 18 Indian-made passenger coaches under a railway supply contract valued at approximately ₹915 crore when signed. The coaches entered Bangladesh through Darshana on October 16, marking progress on an agreement covering 200 broad-gauge passenger carriages. This shipment consists of coaches assembled into a rake, rather than several separate trains. Manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, Punjab, the consignment was dispatched on October 12. RITES, the Indian public-sector engineering and transport consultancy, is supplying the coaches to Bangladesh Railway under the agreement signed in May 2024. The first batch includes 11 non-air-conditioned Shovan chair cars, three air-conditioned chair cars, two air-conditioned sleeper coaches and two air-conditioned power cars with guard accommodation and luggage space. The broader order covers seven variants tailored to Bangladesh Railway’s requirements. The $111.26-million contract was secured through international competitive bidding and is financed by the European Investment Bank. Its scope extends beyond manufacturing to include design support, spare parts and training, alongside delivery, commissioning and warranty commitments. For India, the shipment demonstrates how domestic railway manufacturing can serve overseas customers alongside the country’s own transport needs. It also provides a concrete example of commercial railway cooperation between the two neighbours. For Bangladesh, the coaches are intended to strengthen its passenger fleet. Their arrival is an initial milestone in the larger procurement programme; completion of the entire 200-coach order remains separate from this first delivery.
