Dyson’s Rs.40,000 New AI Toothbrush Draws Praise—and Criticism Over Price Dyson has entered the oral-care market with CameraJet, an approx Rs.40,000 electric toothbrush featuring a built-in camera, artificial intelligence and an automatic mouthwash jet. The unusually expensive product has attracted attention online, with critics describing it as an over-engineered solution to an everyday task. A 100,000-pixel macro camera inside the brush head captures 28 images per second. Dyson’s “Gap Optical Targeting” software uses machine learning to identify spaces between teeth and activates a targeted jet of mouthwash within 100 milliseconds. Users can also watch live footage from inside their mouths and receive brushing guidance through the MyDyson app. Dyson says the machine-learning system was trained using 470,000 dental images and that CameraJet contains 16 million lines of code. The company claims its system removes considerably more plaque from difficult areas than premium electric toothbrushes under specified laboratory conditions. The device costs approximately £420 in Britain and $499 in the United States. Additional concerns have been raised about the expense of replacement brush heads and Dyson’s specially developed low-foaming toothpaste and mouthwash. Privacy has also entered the discussion because the product places a connected camera inside the user’s mouth. Dyson says images are processed on the device and are neither stored nor shared. Nevertheless, some potential buyers remain uncomfortable with a Wi-Fi-connected oral-care appliance. Dental professionals have offered a more practical warning. Advanced technology may help people identify missed areas, but it cannot compensate for consistent brushing, interdental cleaning and regular dental examinations. Questions also remain over whether its liquid jet can completely replace traditional flossing for every user. CameraJet demonstrates how AI is entering personal healthcare. Its biggest challenge, however, may be convincing consumers that better brushing requires a camera—and costs as much as a budget smartphone.
