Bombay High Court to Authorities: Protect Nature Before Building Infrastructure The Bombay High Court has made strong observations on balancing development with environmental protection while hearing a case related to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project. The matter concerns a proposal to cut 847 mangrove trees for laying a power transmission line connected to the high-speed rail corridor. During the hearing, the court stressed that environmental protection should not become an afterthought and remarked that afforestation should begin before trees are felled for development projects. Expressing concern over the rapid loss of green cover, the bench warned that if environmental degradation continues unchecked, "one day people will have to carry oxygen cylinders." The judges observed that authorities often identify land for compensatory afforestation only after cutting trees, whereas the process should be reversed. "Ideally, you should start the afforestation and then think of chopping down the trees," the court remarked, while referring to past instances where promised plantations allegedly remained only on paper. At the same time, the High Court clarified that it is not seeking to halt the bullet train project. Instead, it wants the government to adopt a more sustainable model in which environmental safeguards keep pace with infrastructure development. The Maharashtra government informed the court that compensatory afforestation is already being carried out and assured that the suggestion of planting trees closer to future project sites would be considered. Based on this assurance, the court allowed the project to continue while keeping the environmental issues under examination. The observations have reignited the debate over how India can pursue major infrastructure projects without compromising ecological balance. Environmentalists have welcomed the court's emphasis on preserving mangroves, which play a vital role in protecting coastal ecosystems and reducing the impact of climate change.
