The Himalayas and the Aravalli range together play an important role in how air moves over northern India, especially the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Because of their location and shape, they act like natural barriers that slow down the movement of air, creating conditions where pollution can easily build up. The Himalayas, lying to the north of the Indo-Gangetic Plain, are very high and continuous. They block strong winds coming from Central Asia and prevent polluted air from easily moving northward. As a result, air that is already polluted tends to stay trapped over the plains instead of dispersing away. The Aravalli range, though much lower than the Himalayas, runs diagonally from the northwest to the southwest. Instead of channeling winds effectively, its orientation weakens the movement of air from west to east. This reduces ventilation in the plains, especially in states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and western Uttar Pradesh. Together, these two mountain systems create a kind of āair chamberā or basin effect over the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Winds are weaker, vertical mixing of air is limited, and pollutants released from vehicles, industries, crop burning, and household fuels remain close to the ground. This problem becomes worse in winter. Cold air near the surface gets trapped under warmer air above (a condition called temperature inversion). When this happens, pollution cannot rise and disperse, so it accumulates rapidly near the surface, leading to severe smog. Because of this geography and climate combination, the Indo-Gangetic Plain experiences much higher and more persistent air pollution compared to many other parts of India, even when pollution sources may be similar elsewhere.
