This is the Castleford Viaduct on the Castleford to Garfoth railway line. Opening on the 8th April 1878 the viaduct spanned the River Aire allowing trains to carry heavy freight, mainly coal from the local collieries such as Swillington, Astley, and Allerton Bywater. The single line was doubled in some places to allow standing crossovers. A passenger service by the North Eastern Railway service ran from 1878 until 1951, giving an alternative route between Leeds and Castleford. Excursions and diverted passenger services continued on this route well into the 1960’s. With the demand for coal reducing in the 1990’s the freight services reduced until they finally stopped running on 6th June 1998. The line was retained until the early 2000’s when Railtrack gave permission to have the Level Crossing North and a Height Restriction Road Bridge to the south over Wheldon Road removed spelt the end of the lines operation. In 2009 Network Rail ran a feasibility study to re-open the line but when the initial costings were calculated it was deemed uneconomical. The 260 Meter or 840 foot long, Castleford Viaduct has a centre bridging section comprising of a twin arch girder approach span, with a bow string centre section with two long plate girder approach spans, supported by sets of tubular steel piers with nine on the southern side, and ten on the northern side.
