iPhone 18 Faces Boycott Calls Over Congoās āConflict Mineralsā Appleās newly launched iPhone 18 series is facing boycott calls and online protests from activists who say the excitement surrounding new smartphones hides the human cost of mineral extraction in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Campaigners have focused particularly on coltan, an ore processed to produce tantalum. The heat-resistant metal is widely used in tiny capacitors that control electricity inside smartphones, computers and other electronic devices. Congo possesses major coltan deposits, but mining and trading in its conflict-hit eastern region have repeatedly been illegal mining groups, unsafe working conditions. The latest criticism builds upon protests organised during previous iPhone launches and legal complaints filed by Congo against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium. Congolese authorities alleged that minerals originating in troubled mining areas were being transported through neighbouring countries and entering international supply chains with their true origin hidden.
