Indian Railways 'Gajraj Suraksha' AI System Is Helping Save Elephants From Train Accidents Indian Railways is highlighting the success of its AI-powered "Gajraj Suraksha" system, a technology designed to prevent collisions between trains and animals in some of the country's busiest wildlife corridors. The system has gained fresh attention after officials shared how artificial intelligence and optical fibre technology are helping detect elephants near railway tracks before a train arrives, allowing drivers enough time to slow down or stop. The initiative is being seen as one of India's most innovative uses of AI for wildlife conservation. The Gajraj Suraksha system works using an Intrusion Detection System built on existing optical fibre cables laid along railway tracks. As elephants move near the tracks, the vibrations they create disturb the light signals travelling through the fibre-optic network. Artificial intelligence analyses these disturbances and determines whether the movement is caused by elephants, other animals or humans. If an elephant is detected within about 200 metres of the track, an alert is immediately sent to the station master, railway control room and locomotive pilot. The system claims an accuracy of nearly 99.5 percent in identifying potential collisions. Following successful trials, the Railway Ministry has announced plans to expand Gajraj Suraksha across nearly 700 kilometres of elephant corridors. Conservationists have welcomed the move, calling it a practical example of how artificial intelligence can protect wildlife without disrupting transport infrastructure. Officials believe the technology could eventually become a standard safety feature across vulnerable railway routes in India.
