NASA Launches Roman Telescope to Investigate Universe’s Greatest Mysteries NASA has successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, beginning a major mission to study dark energy, dark matter and planets beyond the Solar System. Roman lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on August 30, 2026. The telescope separated from the rocket approximately 31 minutes later and began travelling towards Sun–Earth Lagrange Point 2, or L2, nearly 1.5 million kilometres from Earth. The spacecraft is now undergoing commissioning, during which controllers will inspect its systems, align its telescope and test its two principal instruments. Scientific observations are expected to begin after Roman reaches its operating region and completes these checks. Roman carries a 2.4-metre primary mirror—the same diameter as Hubble’s—but its Wide Field Instrument can observe a much larger portion of the sky in a single exposure. NASA expects it to survey enormous numbers of galaxies, helping scientists measure how the universe has expanded and how dark energy may be influencing that expansion. The observatory will also map the distribution of dark matter by studying how gravity bends light from distant objects. Initial scientific images are expected following commissioning in 2027. NASA has high expectations because Roman combines Hubble-like image sharpness with wide-area surveys, complementing the more narrowly focused but highly sensitive James Webb Space Telescope.
