Back in 2013, a bizarre case in China made international headlines and later went viral as one of the strangest true crime stories. It involved a business dispute that spiraled into a chain of hired hitmen, each passing the job down the line. The story began with a real estate developer named Tan Youhui in Guangxi province. He had a conflict with a competitor, a businessman named Wei, and decided to have him deleted. Tan paid about two million yuan (roughly $300,000 at the time) to a hitman to carry out the job. Instead of going through with it, that hitman pocketed part of the money and subcontracted to another hitman, offering him a smaller fee to do the job. This process kept repeating. The second hitman then hired a third, who hired a fourth, and eventually there was even a fifth hitman involved. With each handoff, the payment amount got smaller, as each hitman tried to make a profit while avoiding doing the actual killing. By the time the plan reached the last hired hitman, he decided the whole thing wasn’t worth the trouble. Rather than carrying out the murder, he approached the intended victim, Wei, and offered to stage his own death so they could fool the person higher up the chain. Wei agreed to report it, and the bizarre pyramid of subcontracted hitmen unraveled. Eventually, the plot was exposed, and all six men — the original businessman and the five hitmen — were arrested. They faced trial in 2019, years after the original deal, and were sentenced to prison terms ranging from two years to life, depending on their roles. The case became famous worldwide not just for its criminal element but for the absurdity of the setup. It’s often cited as a cautionary tale of greed, incompetence, and how far removed a plan can become from its original intention when everyone tries to pass the responsibility onto someone else.
