Centre announces free online coaching for competitive exams The Indian government has announced plans to provide free online coaching to students preparing for competitive examinations, aiming to reduce their dependence on expensive private institutes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the initiative during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on August 15, 2026. He said coaching expenses had become a major financial burden for poor and middle-class households, with some families spending substantial portions of their income or sending children to distant coaching centres. The programme is expected to combine India’s digital infrastructure with lessons from experienced teachers, allowing students to study from home. The first phase could focus on engineering and medical entrance examinations such as JEE and NEET. Reports suggest the platform may launch as early as October 2, although the government has not yet published complete operational guidelines. An online, interactive system supported by artificial intelligence is reportedly being developed to offer recorded lessons, practice material, tests and personalised assistance. Offline access may eventually be added for students in rural and underserved areas with unreliable internet connectivity.
