Vikram-1 Success Makes India World's Third Country With Private Orbital Launch Capability India has entered a small group of nations capable of sending rockets into orbit through private enterprise after Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket. The rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on July 18, 2026, as part of Mission Aagaman. It reached an orbit of about 450 kilometres and carried several commercial and technology-demonstration payloads. The mission marked the first time an Indian private company had designed, developed and successfully launched an orbital rocket. While India became only the third country after the United States and China to achieve a private orbital rocket launch, the mission also created another piece of history. Skyroot's Vikram-1 is reported to be the first privately developed orbital rocket anywhere in the world to reach orbit successfully on its very first launch attempt, making the achievement even more significant for India's growing private space industry. Developed by Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace, Vikram-1 is a four-stage rocket built mainly to carry small satellites into low-Earth orbit. The 22-metre vehicle can reportedly carry payloads weighing up to 350 kilograms and uses technologies including carbon-composite structures, solid-fuel stages and 3D-printed engine components. India opened its space sector to greater private participation in 2020, allowing startups to work more closely with ISRO facilities and infrastructure.
