Last year, during heightened tensions between India and Pakistan around May Operation Sindoor, the Pakistan Air Force publicly claimed it had shot down several Indian fighter jets, including a few Dassault Rafale aircraft. Among those they named was the Rafale with the tail number BS-022. Islamabad’s military and some Pakistani media repeatedly asserted that jets like BS-022 had been destroyed in aerial combat. India never confirmed those Pakistani assertions in detail at the time, with official statements focusing on broader combat operations and all pilots returning safely. There was international media discussion and confusion over exactly what was lost, but Pakistan’s version of events remained unverified by independent sources for the claimed shoot-downs. On 26 January 2026, during the 77th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi, the Indian Air Force showcased its aircraft in a grand aerial fly-past. Among the jets that appeared was the Rafale with tail number BS-022 — the very aircraft Pakistan had claimed to have shot down. The presence of BS-022 flying in the parade and in official IAF footage countered the earlier Pakistani claims, showing that this particular Rafale was still operational and active more than eight months after the original conflict. India also released high-resolution video clips of these aircraft as part of the Republic Day showcase, which supporters of the Indian position present as evidence that Pakistan’s earlier claims were exaggerated or false. This moment was widely interpreted in India as dispelling at least some of the misinformation about Indian losses during that 2025 aerial engagement. The broader context is that both sides made competing claims and narratives about losses and successes during the May 2025 crisis, and independent confirmation has been limited. But the public display of BS-022 during the Republic Day fly-past became a visible symbol that that specific claim of a downed Rafale was not accurate.
