Russia Preparing List to Bring Remaining Indian Recruits Home Russia is compiling a list of Indian citizens still serving with its armed forces and has promised to send them home once they are identified, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said. Peskov made the announcement during an interaction with Indian journalists ahead of the BRICS summit in New Delhi. He said Moscow remained in close contact with India over the issue, which New Delhi has raised repeatedly with Russian authorities. India’s Ministry of External Affairs estimates that approximately two dozen Indians continue to serve in the Russian military. The government is seeking their early discharge and repatriation. According to recently reported official figures, at least 227 Indians were recruited into the Russian armed forces during the war in Ukraine. Of these, 139 have been released from service and 51 have died. The status of some remaining recruits has not been fully established. Several affected Indians and their families have alleged that recruitment agents offered them jobs in Russia as security guards, cooks, drivers or labourers. After reaching the country on tourist or student visas, some were reportedly pressured into signing Russian-language contracts, given limited military training and deployed alongside combat units. Others may have knowingly signed military contracts after being attracted by salaries, residency benefits or recruitment bonuses. Indian authorities have repeatedly warned citizens against accepting unverified employment offers connected to the Russian military. The latest assurance is significant because Russia had previously agreed to release Indian recruits following discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin. However, some citizens remained trapped in military service. Peskov’s announcement does not provide a final return date, but the preparation of a verified list could allow Russian authorities to locate the remaining Indians, terminate their contracts and arrange their journey back to India.
