India’s Own “Artificial Sun” Showcases Nation’s Growing Fusion Power Ambition India’s advanced nuclear-fusion research is attracting widespread attention after videos of a powerful plasma machine went viral online, with proud social-media users describing it as the country’s “artificial Sun.” The machine is operated by the Institute for Plasma Research near Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The government-funded scientific institution works under the Department of Atomic Energy and represents India’s growing capability in one of the world’s most complex research areas. Its major facilities include ADITYA-U and the Steady State Superconducting Tokamak, known as SST-1. A tokamak uses strong magnetic fields to control extremely hot plasma inside a doughnut-shaped chamber. Scientists are attempting to reproduce the basic fusion process that powers the Sun. During fusion, lighter atomic nuclei combine and release enormous amounts of energy. If successfully developed for commercial use, the technology could eventually provide abundant electricity with low carbon emissions and relatively little long-lived radioactive waste. SST-1 has given Indian scientists valuable experience in superconducting magnets, plasma heating, reactor engineering, diagnostic systems and long-duration operations. These are crucial technologies for building future fusion-energy facilities. India is also an important partner in ITER, the world’s largest experimental fusion project under construction in France. Indian scientists and companies are developing and supplying sophisticated components for the international programme, demonstrating the country’s ability to contribute to global mega-science missions. Although commercial fusion electricity remains a future objective, India has already established the scientific knowledge, institutions and engineering workforce needed to participate in the international race. The viral “India’s Sun” description reflects growing public pride in a research programme that could help shape humanity’s future energy supply.
