400-Year-Old Cannon Stolen from Madhya Pradesh Fort in Daring Overnight Heist in India A centuries-old cannon preserved at the historic Narwar Fort in Madhya Pradesh has been stolen in a meticulously planned overnight operation, raising fresh concerns about the security of India's protected heritage sites. The massive cannon, believed to date back nearly 400 years and weighing around three tonnes, disappeared from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-protected fort in Shivpuri district after an armed gang allegedly overpowered security personnel. According to police, around 25 to 30 armed men entered the fort during the night of July 15-16 through a rear approach. Investigators believe the group arrived with heavy equipment, including a crane and a truck, to transport the enormous cannon. Security guards, who were reportedly unarmed, said they were threatened and forced to step aside as the gang carried out the operation. The stolen cannon was one of 14 historic artillery pieces displayed at the fort, leaving only 13 behind. Officials suspect the theft was carefully planned. Reports indicate that the cannon had fallen from its platform a few days earlier and was left unsecured, making it easier for the thieves to remove. Police are examining CCTV footage, technical evidence and possible escape routes, while also investigating whether the theft is linked to an interstate or international antiquities smuggling network. The incident has revived memories of a similar cannon theft from the same fort nearly two decades ago. The theft has also reignited debate over the protection of India's archaeological heritage. Experts say rare historical weapons and artefacts can fetch huge sums in the illegal international antiquities market, making monuments vulnerable to organised criminal networks. Authorities have promised to strengthen security at Narwar Fort and intensify efforts to recover the missing cannon.
