₹104 Crore Worth of Railway Linen Stolen in Four Years, RTI Report Reveals Massive Losses An RTI-based investigation has uncovered a surprising form of theft affecting Indian Railways. According to data collected from railway divisions across the country, bedroll items worth more than ₹104 crore have disappeared from AC coaches between January 2022 and May 2026. The missing items include towels, bedsheets, blankets, pillows and pillow covers that are provided to passengers during overnight journeys. The findings have sparked fresh concerns over passenger behaviour and the financial burden placed on the railway system. The report estimates that nearly 1.27 crore linen items were stolen during the four-year period. Face towels emerged as the most frequently stolen item, followed by bedsheets and pillow covers. Data gathered from 54 railway divisions across 16 railway zones showed that some of the highest losses were reported from Bikaner, Ranchi, Delhi, Mumbai, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad and Danapur divisions. Railway officials say around eight lakh passengers use AC bedroll services every night across the network. While only a small fraction of passengers are believed to take the linen home, the cumulative losses have become substantial over the years. The Ministry of Railways has described the issue as a matter of serious concern and said efforts are being intensified to prevent theft, improve monitoring and take action against offenders. The revelations have triggered widespread discussion on social media, with many users expressing disbelief that such everyday items could result in losses exceeding ₹100 crore. Others have suggested stricter checks, better awareness campaigns and alternative methods of distributing linen to reduce misuse. In this video, we explain how the RTI exposed the scale of the problem, which railway zones were affected the most, why towel theft tops the list, and what Indian Railways is planning to do to curb these recurring losses.
