Indian people amazed as Maharashtra and Karnataka Lead India’s Latest State-Wise FDI Rankings Maharashtra and Karnataka attracted more than half of India’s foreign direct investment equity inflows during financial year 2025–26, according to the latest data compiled by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. India received approximately $58.85 billion in FDI equity during the year, up from around $50.02 billion in 2024–25. This category covers foreign money invested in ownership stakes and should not be confused with gross FDI, which also includes reinvested earnings and other capital. Maharashtra retained first place with approximately $18.42 billion, representing more than 31% of the national total. Its strong position reflects Mumbai’s role as India’s financial and corporate centre, along with investment in services, infrastructure, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, data centres and manufacturing. Karnataka ranked second with around $12.94 billion, nearly double its $6.62-billion inflow during the previous year. Bengaluru’s technology companies, startup ecosystem, global capability centres, electronics projects and skilled workforce helped the state secure almost 22% of India’s FDI equity. Delhi and associated Union Territory reporting accounted for approximately $6.18 billion, followed by Gujarat at $5.71 billion, Tamil Nadu at $4.72 billion and Haryana at $4.53 billion. Telangana received around $2.25 billion, while Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh each remained near or below $1 billion. Maharashtra and Karnataka together attracted approximately 53% of national FDI equity. The figures illustrate how foreign investment remains concentrated around a limited number of metropolitan and industrial centres. However, state-wise FDI statistics require caution. Investment is generally assigned according to the registered location of the recipient company. A business headquartered in Mumbai or Bengaluru may use that capital for projects elsewhere. Therefore, the rankings do not perfectly measure factories constructed, employment created or investment physically deployed within each state. Computer software and hardware was the largest recipient sector nationally, followed by services, reinforcing the advantage held by India’s established technology and financial hubs.
