Recent automobile data shows that petrol cars are losing market share in India, although the country’s overall passenger-vehicle market is growing. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), petrol/ethanol cars accounted for 41.68% of passenger-vehicle retail sales in July 2026. Their share was 43.15% in June 2026 and 47.62% in July 2025. This means petrol’s market share fell by almost six percentage points in one year. Alternative-fuel vehicles are now almost level with petrol cars. In July, CNG vehicles had a 24.67% share, hybrids 8.02% and electric vehicles 7.90%. Together, these categories represented 40.59% of sales, only 1.09 percentage points behind petrol cars. One year earlier, petrol’s lead over these alternatives was more than 13 percentage points. In a year-on-year (YoY) comparison of Indian passenger vehicle retail data for the month of July, the share of pure petrol/ethanol vehicles plummeted from 47.62% in July 2025 to 41.68% in July 2026. One reason is the lower running cost offered by CNG and electric vehicles. Buyers also have more EV, hybrid and factory-fitted CNG models to choose from. Higher petrol prices and concern about future fuel costs are influencing purchasing decisions as well. Another factor is uncertainty surrounding E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol. Some owners of older cars are worried about reduced mileage, component wear and whether their vehicles are fully compatible with the fuel. FADA said consumer anxiety and unclear communication may be affecting demand, although it had not received formal complaints proving that E20 caused vehicle problems. The government and state-owned fuel companies maintain that E20 meets prescribed quality standards. Fuel companies said their testing found no significant chloride contamination or water entering storage tanks. The government argues that ethanol blending reduces oil imports, lowers emissions and benefits farmers.
