India Tackles Number-Plate Tampering as Barrier-Free Tolling Expands India’s move towards barrier-free toll collection has created a new enforcement challenge: some motorists are allegedly covering or altering their registration plates to avoid automatic detection. The new system allows vehicles to cross a tolling point without stopping at a booth. Overhead Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras read the registration number, while high-speed RFID equipment detects the vehicle’s FASTag and deducts the required fee. It is therefore not strictly a “camera-only” system. ANPR and FASTag operate together, providing two methods of identifying a vehicle. The government is initially introducing the technology at selected locations before deciding on wider implementation. Other vehicles allegedly have bent, faded or non-standard plates that cameras cannot read correctly.
