Concorde was one of the greatest engineering marvels in aviation history. It could fly at more than twice the speed of sound, cruising at Mach 2.04, and cut transatlantic flight time between London and New York to under 3.5 hours. However, despite this incredible speed and prestige, Concorde was eventually rejected by almost everyone except British Airways and Air France. The main reason was its extremely high operating cost. It burned massive amounts of fuel, making tickets unaffordable for most people. Only wealthy passengers could pay for the expensive seats, limiting its market. Further, its engines were loud, and its sonic booms when crossing the sound barrier caused public opposition in the US and other countries, which banned supersonic flights over land. This meant it could only fly certain oceanic routes. Another reason was its limited passenger capacity. Concorde could carry around 100 passengers, far fewer than a Boeing 747, making it economically unviable on high-demand routes. Environmental concerns, noise restrictions, and high maintenance costs further reduced its acceptance. Finally, after the 2000 crash in Paris and declining profits, Concorde was retired in 2003. Despite its speed and beauty, the world was simply not ready for such an expensive and noisy plane. Subscribe for more educational content and unlock knowledge every day with FactTechz!
