Why AI Data Centres Cannot Simply Replace Freshwater With Seawater Growing concern over the water consumed by artificial-intelligence infrastructure has prompted a common question: why can data centres not cool their servers using seawater instead of freshwater? The answer is that they can, but only with specially designed systems. Servers do not normally come into direct contact with water. Heat is transferred from processors to air or liquid, after which cooling towers, chillers or heat exchangers remove it. Untreated seawater contains salt, minerals, microorganisms and suspended material. If circulated through conventional cooling equipment, it can corrode pipes and pumps, create mineral deposits, encourage biological growth and eventually damage heat exchangers. Facilities must therefore use corrosion-resistant materials, filtration equipment and carefully separated cooling loops. Desalinating seawater first is another option, but desalination consumes energy, costs money and produces concentrated brine requiring responsible disposal. Seawater cooling also generally makes sense only near a coast. Transporting it to inland data centres would require pipelines, pumping stations and considerable electricity. Environmental concerns create further complications. Intake systems can trap fish larvae and other marine organisms, while returning warmer water to the sea may disturb local ecosystems. Coastal facilities must also prepare for salt exposure, storms, flooding and rising sea levels. However, seawater cooling is not impossible. Google’s Hamina data centre in Finland uses cold seawater through a dedicated heat-exchange system, demonstrating that location-specific designs can reduce freshwater demand. Other alternatives include recycled wastewater, closed-loop liquid cooling, outside-air cooling and systems designed to consume little or no water. The practical solution is therefore not one universal replacement. Operators must select cooling technology according to climate, location, water availability, environmental impact and cost.
