China’s former agriculture minister, Tang Renjian, was recently sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking massive bribes. The verdict was announced by a court in Changchun, Jilin province, at the end of September 2025. The investigation found that between 2007 and 2024, Tang had accepted money and property worth more than 268 million yuan, or about 37 million US dollars, in exchange for helping others secure business deals and promotions. The court ruled that Tang’s crimes were extremely serious and caused major damage to the integrity of the government. However, it also noted that he had confessed, expressed remorse, and returned much of the illicit money. Because of this, instead of an immediate execution, he received a death sentence with a two-year suspension. In China, this means the death penalty is not carried out right away; if the convicted person behaves well during the two-year period, the sentence is usually commuted to life imprisonment. Along with the suspended death sentence, Tang was stripped of all political rights for life, and his personal property was confiscated. The court also ordered that all his illegal gains be turned over to the state. Tang’s case is one of several high-profile corruption prosecutions in China in recent years, part of President Xi Jinping’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign targeting both top-level and local officials. The sentencing sends a strong signal that the government remains determined to punish corruption, even among senior officials. It also highlights how China continues to use the “death with reprieve” system to balance harsh punishment with some degree of leniency for cooperation or remorse.
